Jarvis Insurance Agency, Inc. has deep roots in the history of Pulaski County and has served the insurance needs of the Ohio Valley area for over three-quarters of a century and through four generations. Founded in 1933 by Edward A. Jarvis and W.O. Hays, the agency was originally known as Jarvis-Hays Insurance Agency and was located in the second story of the old First & Farmers Bank Building on the south side of the Public Square. Edward Jarvis, son of Martin Luther Jarvis, a prominent attorney and Federal Judge, acquired sole control of the agency in 1936. Dropping Hays from the title, the business became simply Jarvis Insurance Agency. In 1941, Mr. Jarvis died suddenly at the age of thirty-five leaving his wife Lillian White Jarvis to operate the agency. Becoming a pioneer of women in business and an active member of both the civic and professional community, Lil Jarvis became one of the most prominent and well-known women of her day. In 1973 she was awarded the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the Pulaski County Business & Professional Women's Club. She remained active in the agency until her death in 1979.

In 1948 Jacqueline Jarvis, daughter of Edward and Lil, married James F. McClung upon completing their studies at the University of Kentucky and they moved back to Somerset to join the expanding agency. Mr. McClung, a native of Hitchens, Kentucky, had been a star baseball player for the Wildcats during his collegiate career. In addition to being active in the insurance business, Mr. McClung was involved in many local and state political activities including a bid for Kentucky State Representative. In 1961, the agency relocated from the second story of the First & Farmers Bank Building to the location on the north side of the Public Square.

In 1974, the third generation of the family joined the agency with the addition of Jim Ed McClung. Upon his graduation from Western Kentucky University in 1974, Jim Ed welcomed the chance to join the family business and in 1995, following the passing of his father, became President of the agency. He still holds that position today. In 1995 Jim Ed orchestrated the acquisition of then locally owned Mutual Insurance Agency.

In 2009, James Preston McClung, III joined the agency after his graduation from the University of Kentucky and is now primarily responsible for overseeing state-wide commercial lines development.

In 2017, Jarvis Insurance was blessed with substantial growth which far exceeded what the building downtown could contain. Jim Ed, Preston, and their staff constructed and moved into a beautiful new 4,000 square foot building in a modern commercial development on the northside of town. The new location provides the opportunity for continued growth, as well as a convenient setting for existing and prospective clients.

Each team member at Jarvis Insurance is committed to providing clients the same service that has set Jarvis apart for over eight decades.
